Tearful farewell to Metropolitan

KOTTAYAM, JUNE 18. Thousands of people bid a tearful farewell to Bishop Benyamin Mar Osthathios, who died at a nursing home at Thrissur on Thursday.

The procession carrying the mortal remains of the Metropolitan was met by priests, senior lay leaders of the Jacobite Church and hundreds of others from different walks of life at Ettumanur, where it entered the district, by noon. The procession then moved to the St Mary's Church at Manarcadu via Ayarkunnam.

The mortal remains were placed at the Church for the devotees to pay their last respects. The Metropolitan had earned a special place in the minds of his flock through his total devotion and principled life. People from all sections of the society irrespective of their caste and religion had thronged the church by the time the body arrived. It was placed at the Church for more than 45 minutes before it left for the Simhasana Church in Kottayam town.

After special prayers, hundreds of people including priests from sister churches, civic leaders and leading personalities from all walks of life paid their homage to the Metropolitan.

The procession carrying the body of Mar Osthathios was taken to Manjanikkara (Pathanamthitta district) in the evening via Changanassery, Thiruvalla and Kozhencherry.
