Robbery at church, temple

The boxes, in which the holy objects at the St. Antony's Church were kept, found abandoned in the church compound on Friday.

THRISSUR, JUNE 18. Two separate incidents of burglary took place at the St. Antony's Church, Kodannur near Cherpu and Koodalmanikyam Temple, Irinjalakuda on Thursday night.

Money and holy objects of worship worth Rs. 23,000 were stolen by the burglars who broke into the `Sankeerthi' room of the St. Antony's Church, according to the police.

The stolen objects include four gold-plated crowns, seven `ambu-'s, one monstrance, one luna, chalice and paten, figurine ripped off from the crucifix as well as the rosary of the Holy Mother. Four `bhandaram's of the church were also broken down by the robbers, stealing about Rs. 1,500. The boxes in which the holy objects were kept were found strewn about in the church compound.

The incident must have taken place between 9-30 p.m. on Thursday and 5-20 a.m. on Friday, according to the police. A case has been registered at the Cherpu police station.

In another incident, the `bhandaram' of the Koodalmanikkyam Temple at Irinjalakuda, placed in front of the temple, was also broken open in the early hours of Friday morning. A loss of about Rs. 20,000 has been reported, according to the Devaswom Administrator. A case has been registered with the Irinjalakuda police. The `bhandaram,' was last opened one month ago, after the festival in May.

The thefts are taking place even as the district is reeling under continuous incidents of robbery including that of gold worth crores from a jewellery. Meanwhile, the car involved in the gold robbery case has been taken into custody from a workshop in Paravur. The golden coloured Maruti Esteem car was being repaired at the workshop.
