Nominations accepted

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 18. The election of all six candidates nominated by three parties — four belonging to the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and one each from the Congress and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) — to the Rajaya Sabha has become almost certain, as only the papers submitted by a lone Independent were found invalid during scrutiny today.

The Assembly secretary and returning officer, V. Rajaraman, told reporters here that the nomination of the AIADMK candidates — T.T.V. Dinakaran, K. Malaisamy, S. Anbazhagan and N.R. Govindarajar; the Congress' E.M. Sudarsana Nachiappan, and R. Anbumani of the PMK were accepted.

The nomination of the Independent, K. Padmarajan, was rejected as he had not remitted the deposit and his nomination was not proposed by 10 Legislators.

The scrutiny was conducted in the presence of the Chief Electoral Officer, Mrutyunjay Sarangi. The AIADMK candidates and the Congress nominee were present. The PMK was represented by its president, G.K. Mani.

The election of the AIADMK, Congress and PMK candidates to fill six vacancies could be formally announced only after the completion of withdrawals at 3 p.m. on June 21, as laid down by the Election Commission.
