Four killed as boat capsizes

KASARAGOD, JUNE 18. A woman and three children were killed when the country boat in which they were sailing capsized in the Megral river in the Megral-Puthur panchayat, near here at 9 a.m. today.

The deceased were identified as Kulsu (32), wife of Aboobacker working in Muscat, her two-year-old son, Fariyas, Jaseela (12), daughter of Abdurahiman and Nafreena (10), daughter of Shafi. One of the two injured, Neha, is undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital in the town. Though Neha had breathing-related problems, she had overcome the critical stage, the hospital sources said. Dainabi, who sustained minor injuries, was given first aid at the taluk hospital. The women and children, residents of Azad Nagar, were trying to cross the river to its northern side, Koppalam, to have a closer look at the barge that was detached from a British ship and was harboured at the river mouth on Thursday morning. According to the Additional District Magistrate, Gopalakrishna Bhat, there were about 13 persons in the boat. Meanwhile, the Revenue Minister, K.M. Mani, instructed the District Collector of Kasaragod to rush financial assistance to the families of the deceased. The family of Kulsu would get Rs. 50,000 and that of the others, Rs. 15,000 each.
