Five agro-based units to be set up in Pudukottai

By R. Rajaram

PUDUKOTTAI, JUNE 18. The State-level coordination committee has cleared five proposals to set up agro-based units under the `New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam' in the district. The district-level committee, headed by the Collector, forwarded these proposals last month.

The clearance was given at a high-level meeting of the committee held under the leadership of the Minister for Rural Industries at Chennai on Wednesday, sources told The Hindu here today.

Of the five proposals, two pertained to establishment of freshwater prawn culture units at Kattumavadi in Manamelkudi block and K. Pudupatti in Arimalam block at an outlay of Rs. 34.35 lakhs and Rs. 30.45 lakhs respectively.

The other proposals were establishment of a modern rice mill at an outlay of Rs. 29.05 lakhs in Kunnandarkoil block, decorticating groundnut and groundnut oil extraction unit at a cost of Rs. 32 lakhs and coir product unit at an outlay of Rs. 30 lakhs — both in Viralimalai blocks.

A detailed project report would be prepared and submitted to financial institutions for loans.

Promoters of the units would get 15 per cent of the cost of machinery and equipment, directly involved in production, as subsidy from the Government through the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation.

The District Industries Centre would help them to get clearances from various departments and government agencies to set up the units. In case of any problem or unnecessary delay in starting the unit, the case would be placed before the Single Window Committee headed by the Collector for redressal of grievances, the sources said.

Six agro-based units under the `NAMT' had already commenced production in the district.
