CHENNAI, JUNE 18. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader, M. Karunanidhi, has written to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, and the Karnataka Chief Minister, Dharam Singh, thanking them for their efforts to release Cauvery water for Tamil Nadu. To Dr. Singh and Ms. Gandhi, the DMK leader wrote, "At this critical juncture, your efforts have come as solace to the suffering Cauvery delta farmers." The Pattali Makkal Katchi founder, S.Ramadoss, too has thanked Dr. Singh for his effective intervention. In his letter, he said credit would go to the Prime Minister's administrative acumen for convening the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs rather than calling a Cauvery River Authority meeting, which in the past could not render justice to Tamil Nadu. In a statement, he described water release as a victory for the efforts by the Democratic Progressive Alliance. What the Tamil Nadu Government and the Chief Minister could not achieve in three years was achieved by the DPA in three weeks. It was because of the ruling party's "indifferent" attitude in the last three years that the State could not receive its due share of water. The united move by parties yielded result, Dr. Ramadoss said. Disputing the claim that only surplus water from the Kabini reservoir was released, he said water was being discharged from other Karnataka reservoirs too on the instruction of the Prime Minister. Describing the kuruvai prospects in the delta districts as bright, he expressed the hope that the present efforts would continue until the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was implemented. The Dravidar Kazhagam president, K.Veeramani, also thanked the Prime Minister and Ms. Gandhi. He said though the combined efforts of all parties proved beneficial to the State, nature had a major role in forcing Karnataka to release water. He was happy that all parties came together to get justice for Tamil Nadu. This exercise should continue, he said in a statement.
