Students turn `traffic commandoes'

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JUNE 18. Ever heard of traffic commandoes? No need to conjure up images of hulky, bicep-flaunting men of steel.

The "commandoes" who hit the city roads on Friday were high school children regulating traffic near their schools.

Soon, this would be a common sight in the twin cities if the school principals and parents of the children agree, the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Tejdeep Kaur Menon, maintained.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Additional Commissioner said, "The concept is not new. It is very popular in Mumbai and Chennai. We have requested the principals of all schools to provide at least 24 students to control traffic near their school.

This will also help inculcate traffic sense among the children. It's like entering into a partnership with children."

On Friday, several students were seen controlling traffic at the busy Khairatabad junction.

A group of children, who form the `road safety patrol' in Chennai, were also in the city. Prizes would be given away to the best schools/commandoes.
