CHENNAI, JUNE 19. Recognising music as a powerful vehicle for peace and harmony, Carnatica Group is launching a programme "Music for all... Music for Universal Peace and Harmony on the occasion of World Music Day on Monday. The daylong programme aims at improving public awareness about various musical genres and enhancing public appreciation of musical cultures. The programme will begin with chanting of `OM' at 5.30 a.m. on the Marina and Elliots beaches. This will be followed by a congregational singing at temples, old age homes, the Spastic Society of Tamil Nadu, corporate offices and schools. It will end with a musical extravaganza at Narada Gana Sabha comprising presentations from various musical genres by leading professionals and talented amateurs, says event organisers. The events will be interspersed with spot quizzes on world music and surprise gifts for winners. Known for its innovative methods in promoting music and culture, Carnatica says the idea behind the event was to create awareness about different systems of music in the country. The group has been commemorating World Music Day since 2001. Some of its activities include inviting leading composers, interpreters and musicologists to give lectures and speak about the relevance of music to modern life, organising exhibitions of musical instruments, records, posters, paintings, sculptures, caricatures and photographs on musical themes apart from meetings of artists.
