T.S. Ravi shocks Vijayalakshmi

By Our Sports Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, JUNE 20. T.S. Ravi of Petroleum Sports Promotion Board shocked India's first WGM Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi of Indian Airlines, while B.S. Shivanandan of Karnataka upset IM Lanka Ravi (PSPB) in the fourth round games of the 42nd National `B' chess championship being held at Chenupati Ramakotiah Indoor Stadium here on Sunday.

In Nimzo Indian Defence, Vijayalakshmi, by her own confession, played a casual move — preferred castling. This saw her soon slip into a minus position. Later, a tricky variation developed which also saw her pawn down in knight ending. And, to the delight of her rival, Vijayalakshmi resigned after 55 moves.

The contest between Ravi and Shivanandan, which began with Grunfeld Defence, looked to be a keen tussle. Though Ravi soon gained a clear edge with clever manouevre of his pieces in the middle-game, he blundered a piece (knight) in the end-game which proved costly.

The results (fifth round): Sriram Jha (4.5) drew with R.B. Ramesh (4.5); Dinesh Kumar Sharma (4.5) drew with M.R. Venkatesh (4.5); G.B. Prakash (4) lost to Dronavalli Harika (5); G.N.
