This Day That Age
Laying the foundation-stone of the Gandhi Memorial at Cape Comorin on June 20, Acharya J.B. Kripalani urged the people to concentrate on the Gandhian philosophy of life. Mr. Kripalani told the large gathering that had assembled to pay homage to the memory of the Father of the Nation that this memorial should not merely add to the many temples that already exist for worshippers. "Let this temple be a little different from other temples, because it represents a new philosophy of life. Let us concentrate upon that philosophy of life." Appealing to the people to contribute towards recouping the Rs.2 lakhs that the Government were spending for the creation of the memorial, Mr. Kripalani suggested that the Government should arrange for the issue of two-anna Gandhi memorial stamps through post offices so that the common man might make his contribution. Requesting Mr. Kripalani to lay the foundation stone, the Chief Minister, Mr. Pattom Thanu Pillai, said that though they were fulfilling a six-year-old resolve to enshrine Gandhiji's memory, that memory should be perpetuated by absorbing into our life right thinking and right action, truth and non-violence which Gandhiji "sought to teach us and in the very act of preaching which he fell."
