MANAMA, JUNE 21. Iran has seized three British naval vessels and detained an eight-member crew, within days of Britain backing key U.N. Security Council members that have accused Teheran of not cooperating with the world's nuclear monitoring authority. Iran's Al-Alam satellite television reported that the arrests had been made on the Shatt al-Arab waterway that marks the boundary between Iran and Iraq. The Shatt al-Arab channel is formed at the confluence of the rivers Tigris and Euphrates and leads into the Persian Gulf. The television station said that weapons and maps were found on board. The Iranian military authorities have confirmed the report. "This morning we got news that a number of foreign vessels entered Iranian waters without permission. Three boats were guided to Iranian shores and more than five crew were arrested," an Iranian spokesman said. The British Ministry of Defence, however, said it had no information about the incident, but was looking into the reports.
