CHITRADURGA, JUNE 21. M.A. Sadiq, Deputy Commissioner, has warned people against travelling on the roofs of private buses in the district. At a meeting here on Monday, he asked the officials to initiate action against the drivers and owners of private buses that allowed people to sit on the roof of buses. "Most of the private buses, which are plying in rural areas, are overcrowded and the bus crew allow passengers to sit on the roofs. The transport officers should insist on private buses plying in their allotted routes. If rooftop travelling continues even after our warning, spot fines should be imposed, and the officers should cancel the transport route permits of such buses," Mr. Sadiq said. He said that additional transport permits should be given to private operators to improve the transport network in the district. G.B. Chebbi, Superintendent of Police, promised to improve the transport system in the district and also protect the interests of the travellers. He said that the Police Department would also help put an end to people travelling on the roofs of buses. K.T. Halaswamy, Regional Transport Officer, explained the measures taken by Transport Department to improve the traffic system in the district. S.H. Vijay Kumar, Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner, and other officers participated in the meeting.
