CHENNAI, JUNE 21. The Union Health Minister, R. Anbumani, who was nominated by the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and five other candidates four belonging to the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and one from the Congress were today declared elected today to the Rajya Sabha. As the deadline for withdrawal of nominations came to a close at 3 p.m., the Returning Officer and State Assembly Secretary, V. Rajaraman, declared the election of T.T.V. Dinakaran, K. Malaisamy, S. Anbazhagan and N.R. Govindarajar (all AIADMK), E.M. Sudarsana Nachiappan (Congress) and Dr. Anbumani (PMK), whose nomination papers had already been found valid and accepted. The nomination of the lone Independent candidate, K. Padmarajan, was rejected during the scrutiny held on June 18, on the ground that it was not proposed by ten Members of the Legislative Assembly and he had not remitted the deposit at the time of filing his nomination, he recalled. Since only six candidates, whose "papers were validly accepted", were in the fray, matching the six vacancies for the Rajya Sabha from the State, they had been declared duly elected without any contest, Mr. Rajaraman said. Election certificates were issued to all the six successful candidates, he added. An extract of the Supreme Court's direction that the election of the Members of the Rajya Sabha was subject to orders that might be passed at the final disposal of the writ petitions, was also furnished to the winning candidates. The AIADMK candidates were the first to receive the certificates from the Returning Officer. The newly-elected MPs were felicitated by the Minister for Public Works, O. Panneerselvam, and some other Ministers, who presented them shawls. The PMK president, G.K. Mani, honoured Dr. Anbumani, by presenting a shawl. The Congress MP, Mr.Sudarsana Nachiappan, was greeted by his party functionaries.
