Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 21. There will be a steep decline in paddy yield in Karaikal this year, due to non-availability of Cauvery water, said Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam. He told The Hindu here today that the Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, had submitted a letter to the Centre, urging it to ensure that Karaikal received pro rata water from Cauvery from Tamil Nadu, now that Karnataka had released water to that State. The Minister, who returned on Saturday from a foreign tour, said that crop diversification was being promoted in Karaikal. There was also a massive scheme to promote rainwater harvesting for the benefit of farmers. Check-dams had been constructed at four points in Karaikal, by utilising funds from the European Commission. De-silting of irrigation tanks have also been taken up. Central assistance was also being extended to drought-hit farmers.
