Cost-effective scheme for laying road launched

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JUNE 21 . The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, formally launched a cost-effective scheme to lay part of the Ambour Salai in Bussy Assembly constituency, making use of the polymer-bitumen aggregate mix on Friday.

The scheme is being implemented with the technical guidance from the Head of Department of Chemistry in Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, R. Vasudevan, innovator of the programme. Mr.Vasudevan was also present when the scheme was launched.

A team of officers of the PWD explained to the Chief Minister on the material used and the comparative advantages the polymer-bitumen mix had in raising the infrastructure.

The DMK legislator representing the constituency, Annibal Kennedy, expressed gratitude to the Chief Minster and the department for taking up the work on an experimental basis.

An informed source said that the technology involved utilisation of the waste plastic materials, such as plastic cups, carry bags and other plastic materials, which would be normally thrown away after use.

Though only a small stretch of the road (400 metres) had been laid under the scheme, it would be extended to other parts depending on the success of the new technology, the Chief Minister said appreciating the interest evinced by the PWD in executing the work. This technology of making use of the used plastic materials for laying the surface of the road offered good assurance on the strength of the road.

It was also felt the voluntary and non governmental organisations like the self help groups could be associated to collect the used plastic products which could be chopped into pieces before preparing the final mix.

He said that utilisation of the used plastic materials would also create awareness among the people of the utility of such materials.
