Uttaranchal
By Our Staff Correspondent
DEHRA DUN, JUNE 21 .Satish Sharma was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on Congress ticket from this State today. Later, talking to newspersons, he said that he had been given the ticket so that he could be inducted into the Union Cabinet. However, he said he would work for Uttaranchal despite a busy schedule in Delhi. Uttaranchal needed a Central package for development works immediately and he would lobby for it at the Centre, he said. "Similarly, the State's name should be Uttarakhand and not Uttaranchal," he added Asked whether his presence would further intensify the internal rift in the Congress, Capt.Sharma said he would be acting as a unifying factor among the various groups. "The Congress is a vibrant democratic force and it is normal to see leaders disagreeing with each other on certain issues," he said. The Opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, failed to put up a common candidate even for a friendly contest. This was mainly due to the lack of consensus despite several meetings of the leaders of these parties.
