Farmer, daughter end life

KHAMMAM, JUNE 21. A farmer and his daughter committed suicide in Chennur village of Kallur mandal as debts and litigation had reportedly left the family's finances crippled. Reports said Mara Jamalaiah (45) and his daughter Lakshmi (15) consumed poison at their house on Sunday. The farmer had reportedly been negotiating with a moneylender and had been in a fight with him, which the moneylender had reported to the police. Reportedly upset over the episode, Jamalaiah ended his life. His daughter followed suit.

TIRUPATI: Ravuri Venkatrami Reddy (50) from Obireddigari Palle in the Tamballapalle constituency in Chittoor district ended his life by consuming pesticide. Reports said the farmer had 4.5 acres of land and loans to the tune of Rs. 3 lakhs. He died on Sunday at the Government General Hospital in Madanapalle, where he had been taken. Reddy had reportedly been upset over the non- availability of fresh loans to raise groundnut on his land, which he had tilled and kept ready for sowing. He had taken loans from the local single window society, a public sector bank and moneylenders.

KARIMNAGAR: M. Mallaiah (40) committed suicide by hanging himself in his house in Venkatapur village of Manthani mandal. Reports said the farmer had incurred debts to the tune of Rs. 70,000. He is survived by wife and a daughter.

ANANTAPUR: One more farmer committed suicide in the district late last night. S. Pedda Narasimhulu (55) of Vasantapuram village in Dharmavaram rural mandal consumed poison to end his life. He had accumulated debts to the tune of Rs. 2 lakhs. He is survived by wife, a physically handicapped daughter and a son apart from two married daughters.

GUNTUR: A farmer from Veerapauram village in Piduguralla mandal committed suicide by consuming pesticide. The farmer, Kavuri Durgaraghava Prasad is survived by wife and two children. Fifteen days ago he had contacted district officials over the Helpline and the MRO, C.K. B. V. Prasad, prevailed upon lenders not to pester the farmer and they obliged.

Clarification

Hyderabad: The Principal Secretary, Revenue, V.P. Jauhari, has clarified that the cases of two farmers committing suicide in Adilabad district, which were reported in these columns on June 18, do not come under the purview of Government order relating to suicide deaths. In the case of Potharla Ganganna, the deceased had no debts with any banks or private persons relating to farming activities and committed suicide due to family disputes, Mr. Jauhari clarified here on Monday. In the case of Sidam Tulasiram too there were no loans on the deceased who committed suicide following a rebuke from his father, he said.
