`Progress possible if benefits of IT reach all sectors'

MANIPAL, JUNE 21. The Deputy Commissioner, S.R. Umashankar, on Monday said the country could progress only if the benefits of information technology reached all the sectors of society.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Udupi Incubation Centre, which is sponsored by the Department of Information Technology and Biotechnology and Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

Mr. Umashankar said information technology could not exist on its own and for its own sake. The knowledge possessed by educational institutions should reach the grassroots. At present, the knowledge of educational institutions was confined only to them. There was a difference between the laboratory and the situation on the ground.

Technology was the backbone of any industry as it promoted innovation and opening up of new avenues for students, trainers, researchers and industrial managers. It created necessary conditions for self-employment. The Udupi Incubation Centre a step in this direction. It aimed at promoting and developing entrepreneurship. The advent of biotechnology had ushered in the second Green Revolution in the country.

The centre would facilitate business management and solve technological problems. It had helped solve the problems connected with the cashew industry. He hoped it would become a model for the State and help in the economic development of the district, Mr. Umashankar said.

B.S. Prabhu, Director of MIT, welcomed the gathering. The Registrar of MAHE, Gurumadhwa Rao, presided over the function. N.V. Subba Reddy delivered the introductory remarks. B.S. Bairy, Joint Director of MIT, proposed a vote of thanks.

A press note issued at the function said the centre would provide necessary climate for innovation and research. It aimed at providing research facilities to small and medium industries. It would inculcate scientific temper among the students. The thrust areas of the centre were development of human resource information systems, Internet and web technology development, development of online character recognition system for different languages, development of customised software package for customers of different application domains, and development of software for the analysis of slope stability, earthwork excavation, rate analysis, character recognition and fingerprint identification systems.
