Massive power cuts across Delhi

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 21. Unscheduled power cuts for hours continued to be the order of the day today in parts of the Capital's trans-Yamuna areas, South-East Delhi and the Walled City, besides a large number of unauthorised colonies and villages in Outer Delhi. The scene was no different in neighbouring Gurgaon where the residents of Palam Vihar complained that they were without power for over five hours.

The worst hit was East Delhi. In a statement, the power discom BSES said the unscheduled load-shedding was due to the "snapping of a jumper" in the Mandola-Gopalur circuit of Delhi Transco.

Among the badly affected colonies were Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, Geeta Colony, Preet Vihar, Patparganj, Vivek Vihar, Seelampur and Mayur Vihar. The colonies in other areas included Guru Angad Nagar, Kamla Market, Kashmiri Gate, Hilton Road and adjoining areas.

The BSES said the discom had to resort to load-shedding for up to hours at Mahavir Enclave in West Delhi due to snapping of conductor.

However, residents of East Delhi alleged that the senior BSES officials had switched off their mobile phone. "There was no response from the officials when we called up," said Sandeep, a resident of Vasundhara Enclave.

Power cuts in other areas under the BSES were also reported due to local faults. They included the Walled City, Old Rajinder Nagar, New Rajinder Nagar, Karol Bagh, Okhla, Madangir, Mehrauli, Tigri, Kalkaji, Greater Kailash.

Complaints of power cuts were also received from Nangloi, Sultanpur, Mangolpuri and Bawana. Meanwhile, the BSES announced load-shedding between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Durga Puri, C-7 Yamuna Vihar, Bhagirati, Vijay Park, Johripur and Khazuri Khas, besides the adjoining areas. This was because of regular maintenance of transformer, it said.
