Lifetime Achievement Award for M.S. Subbulakshmi

NEW DELHI, JUNE 21. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today conferred the "Lifetime Achievement Award" on renowned vocalist and Bharat Ratna awardee, M.S. Subbulakshmi.

The maestro's granddaughter, Sita Ravi, received the award on behalf of Subbulakshmi who could not attend the function due to ill-health.

The Delhi Government has instituted the award, carrying a citation and Rs.11 lakhs in cash.

Paying glowing tributes to the "living legend," Ms. Dikshit said Subbulakshmi had taken Carnatic music to unprecedented heights and her renditions had enthralled people for decades.

The award function was also marked by a short audio-visual presentation on the legend by Avinash Pasricha followed by a Bharatnatyam concert by Priyadarshani Govind.

In a press release today, Sita Ravi said Subbulakshmi would donate the cash award for the ongoing construction of the Mahaswami Manimandapam Project, a grand memorial edifice of the late Kanchi Acharya Chandrasekarendra Saraswati Swamigal of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam at Orirukkai village near Kancheepuram, by Sri Mahaswami Mathrubutheswarar Trust.
