BANGALORE, JUNE 21. A four-member gang attacked two employees of a call centre and robbed them of Rs.1,000 and two wristwatches in Adugodi police station limits in the early hours of Monday. Police said that Sandeep Venkat and Anand Verma, employees of Mphasis, were returning home on a motorcycle when miscreants waylaid them near National Public School around 2.30 a.m., attacked them with clubs and iron rods and robbed them of the cash and wristwatches. The Adugodi police have registered a case.
Woman dies of burns
A 35-year-old woman, who was allegedly set on fire by her husband and in-laws at her house in Byatarayanapura police station limits, died at Victoria Hospital on Sunday night. Police said that Sumathi was married to David, a mason, six years ago. On June 18, David, his mother Lilly alias Leelavathi, and his sister allegedly doused Sumathi with kerosene and set her on fire at their house in Maruthinagar, off Bapujinagar. Sumathi, who was admitted to Victoria Hospital, reportedly told the police that her husband and in-laws used to torture her over trivial matters and had set her ablaze. On Sumathi's statement, the Byatarayanapura police have registered a murder case and are on the look out for David, his mother and sister. Sumathi, a native of Tamil Nadu, was a mother of two children, the police said.
Ornaments stolen
A pair of diamond bangles and a bracelet, estimated at Rs. 4.50 lakh, were stolen from the flat of an American tourist in Ashoknagar police station limits on Monday. In her complaint, Kelly, who is on a two-month tour of India, said that she suspected a guitarist, Bimal of Kammanahalli, to have stolen the ornaments. Bimal had reportedly come to Kelly's flat in the early hours of Monday and left around 7.30 a.m. The Ashoknagar police have registered a case.
Killed
B.R. Chetan (25), a resident of Nelagadarenahalli, was killed on the spot when a maxi-cab knocked him down on National Highway-4 around 9 a.m. on Monday. The Peenya police have registered a case.
Arrested
The Vijayanagar police on June 18 arrested four persons on charges of robbery and recovered from them 10 mobile phones and a gold chain, all valued at Rs.40,000. Jagadish (20), Kiran (18), Umesh (18) and Manjunath (18), were involved in six cases of robbery in Vijayanagar, Kamakshipalya and Jnana Bharathi police station limits, police said. The Indiranagar police on Saturday arrested Vishnuvardhan (27) of NGEF Colony and recovered from him a car valued at Rs.6 lakh. Police said that the accused had stolen two cars from Indiranagar police station limits. The other car is yet to be recovered. In another case, the staff of the Hoysala-57 patrol squad foiled an attempt to steal a car in HAL II Stage on Sunday night. Police said that Firoze (23) of Gowripalya had removed the glass panes of a car and got into it. The Hoysala staff caught him when he was trying to break the steering locks.
