Panchayat courts

Sir, — The news that the West Bengal Government proposes to set up village-level conciliation boards under the panchayat system (June 20) is welcome. The boards, if constituted, can help settle legal disputes in a short time without incurring much expense.

The move is also in keeping with the Law Commission's recommendation that Nyaya Panchayat Courts be set up at the village level.

M. Narayanaswamy,
Chennai
