Inquiry into `misuse' of funds in bank sought

By Our Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR, JUNE 22. Reetha Kulkarni, one of the directors of the District Government Employees Cooperative Bank, has sought an inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of funds in the bank.

Releasing some documents related to bank business at a press conference here recently, she claimed they contained information throwing light on discrepancies in the bank.

Ms. Kulkarni, who has been elected to the bank's Board of Directors from the women employees segment, said there would always be a shortfall of over Rs. 5 lakhs in cash balance. This was being illegally advanced to some private parties for interest, which would go to those involved in the racket, she alleged and urged the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Department to carry out surprise checks.

She said the bank's annual transactions exceeded Rs. 40 crores, and discrimination in sanctioning loans and recovering dues had become the order of the day. A majority of directors had ganged up in cornering the benefits made out of illegal transactions, which, she claimed, had been opposed by her.

As result of this, she had been isolated in the governing body. She said the Government stopped the recruitment of 16 employees to the bank on the ground that rules had been violated but the governing body brought a stay order against the Government order by submitting false information.

Rules had also been violated in giving promotion to the bank employees. Some from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes categories were denied promotional opportunities. A bank employee, (Ravidra Pattar), died while in service and his wife, (Lakshmi), was to be employed on sympathetic grounds.

She had the required qualification but the job was given to some other member of the family overruling her objections. Her cry for justice had been ignored. An inquiry had to be instituted into all these charges immediately, failing which she would resort to hunger strike, she warned.
