Chinta Mohan cries halt to `mandapam' works

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUMALA, JUNE 22. The Tirupati MP-elect, Chinta Mohan, today demanded that all works in progress at the dismantled site of the Thousand Pillar Mandapam (TPM), be halted immediately.

Addressing a contingent of mediapersons at the site, Dr. Chinta Mohan expressed anguish over the excavation work being carried out there. Dubbing the `demolition' of the TPM structure a blunder, he said there was no need for modernisation of the ancient temple town of Tirumala at the cost of its ambience.

If the TTD management was to go ahead with its master plan - which includes construction of another Mahaprakaram, dismantling of TPM and widening of four mada streets -- the heritage of the temple town would suffer a severe blow, he said.

Objecting to the construction of another prakaram, he said that the temple already has three prakarams and if the TTD was keen on adding another, than it will be forced to go in for a fifth prakaram as the number of prakarams of any temple should always remain in odd digit.

Further, he said that the excavation works, may affect the temple complex and the tank - pushkarini - adversely. The demolition of TPM is against the principles of vaasthu too, he added.

When asked why he remained silent all these days, Dr. Chinta Mohan said he was just waiting for the appropriate time to react.

He said he had demanded a comprehensive report from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) regarding ancient structures at Tirumala including the TPM.

He appealed to the authorities and the TTD to protect the `sanctity' of the place, besides preserving the rich heritage both at Tirumala and at the temple of Goddess Padmavathi, Tiruchanoor.
