NEW DELHI, JUNE 22. The Congress high command is closely watching the developments in the party's Delhi unit in view of allegations of wrong-doing levelled against the DPCC president, Chaudhary Prem Singh, by its treasurer, Dinesh Gupta. It has reportedly kept on hold the decision to expel Mr. Gupta from the party for the time being. Mr. Gupta, once considered close to Mr. Prem Singh, had in a letter to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, made serious allegations of financial irregularities by the DPCC president. In retaliation, Mr. Prem Singh suspended Mr. Gupta from the party and recommended to the high command his expulsion for indulging in anti-party activities. Incidentally, Mr. Gupta was handpicked by Mr. Prem Singh for the post of treasurer and what transpired within the last few months ending with both parting ways is a mystery. It is not the first time that allegations have been levelled against Mr. Prem Singh. Earlier, the Outer Delhi Member of Parliament, Sajjan Kumar, is also understood to have complained and written to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, and her political secretary, Ahmed Patel, alleging that the DPCC president had worked against him during the recent Lok Sabha elections. The matter is now with Mr. Patel for a final decision and he is understood to have kept it in abeyance in view of impending changes that are being contemplated in the party set-up at the AICC level. However, a decision on this matter is unlikely to be taken during the next few days as the party leadership is of the view that nothing should be done to aggravate the situation. Mr. Prem Singh has not only suspended Mr. Gupta but also asked him to hand over charge. It is learnt that Mr. Gupta had met both Mr. Patel and the AICC secretary, Anil Shastri, and pleaded innocence. He reportedly submitted that the letter was highly confidential and was not leaked to a section of media by him, an argument Mr. Prem Singh has refused to buy.
