Tirupati
By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUPATI, JUNE 22. Former chairperson of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) and a TDP activist, P.R. Mohan today expressed anguish over the spurt in land-grabbing in Chittoor district especially around Tirupati and Srikalahasti. He demanded probe by a sitting judge of the High Court as some "big shots even belonging to the ruling party" were involved in the incidents. The statement comes in the wake of the alleged involvement of the Srikalahasti Congress MLA, S.C.V. Naidu in a major land row in the Avilala village near Tirupati. A cane crop raised on a disputed land - reportedly worth Rs. 30 crores - was mowed down by the rival party. The district police and revenue authorities had registered cases and made the site out-of-bounds for both the groups. The poclain used to mow down the crop also was recovered. Mohan regretted that despite specific directions by the Supreme Court and the High Courts to the Governments to protect irrigation tanks from being encroached upon, no steps were taken to implement them.
