Archery
Olympics: chance for Indians to stake claim
By Our Sports Reporter
MEERUT,
JUNE 22.
Top-ranked national archers assembled here on Tuesday to stake their claim for Athens Olympics. Tarundeep Rai, Satyadev Prasad, Majhi Sawaiyan and the National champion, Harish Chand Kerai, are vying for the three Olympic berths that India earned during the New York World championship last year.
At the June 23 to 27 Olympic qualification tournament, the final leg of the National ranking prize money event, 32 men archers will vie for the points and money, which has fortunately become a part of the process ever since India qualified for the Olympics in both men and women's sections.
Of the four contenders, Rai has been the most consistent performer over the last 10 months since the prize money tournaments were launched as a qualification ground for the Olympic Games.
The women's team also exudes confidence. Led by Dola Banerjee, the women missed bronze medal by a whisker at the German Grand Prix.
Chekrovolu Swuro and Reena Kumari are the other two currently occupying the top three slots in the National rankings.
