PANAJI, JUNE 22. A delegation from Karnataka, which arrived here today, expressed satisfaction over the rehabilitation package announced by the Goa Government for Kannadigas who had been evicted from Baina. The delegation led by the Industries Minister, P.G.R. Sindhia, expressed happiness over the statement by the Goa Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, that those evicted from Baina were residents of Goa. "They may be from Karnataka, but their welfare is now our concern," he stated. Addressing presspersons with Mr. Parrikar after a meeting at the Secretariat here, Mr. Sindhia said the delegation welcomed the statement of Mr. Parrikar that there was no discrimination against non-Goans. Mr. Parrikar said the Goa Government would make arrangements for temporary rehabilitation of the evacuees by Saturday. They would be rehabilitated within four months. He informed the delegation that the demolition drive was carried out following the High Court order and no discrimination was made. In fact, there were people from other States also at Baina, he added. Some vested interests had launched a campaign against the Goa Government, he alleged. Earlier, Mr. Sindhia along with the members of the delegation, H.K. Patil, MLC; Philomena Peres, Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women; and K.P. Pande, Additional Chief Secretary, visited Baina and heard the grievances of the affected people. The former Minister, Leeladevi R. Prasad, and the former MLC, Prafulla Madhukar, who are camping at Baina, and the local MP, Churchill Alemao, joined the delegation. Mr. Sindhia said Karnataka always wanted cordial relations with Goa. The delegation would urge the Chief Minister of Goa to give protection to Kannadigas working in that State. Durgavva, one of the evacuees, said that she along with other Kannadigas had been living at Baina for many years working as labourers. The Government's action against them was without any notice. Adequate arrangements were not made at the temporary shelter, she added.
