ADILABAD, JUNE 22. While the current rebellion in the ranks of the Telugu Desam Party did not create much of an upheaval in the Adilabad district unit, it is said to have clipped the wings of the former MP and party strongman, S. Venugopalachary. It is well known that Mr. Venugopalachary, also a Polit Bureau member of the TDP, had opposed the candidature of the Mudhole MLA, Narayan Rao Patel, in the recent elections. The latter then joined the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and won from Mudhole. It is also common knowledge that a number of TDP rank and file in the district, including defeated MLAs like G. Nagesh, Boda Janardhan, and the former Minister, Padala Bhumanna, maintain relations with Mr. Patel. "Had Mr. Patel been given the party ticket during the elections, Mr. Venugopalachary would still have been king," an office district office-bearer of the party said. At as meeting on Saturday and Sunday, disgruntled party-men, including the former MLAs, spoke to TDP president and former Chief Minster, N. Chandrababu Naidu, of their objections to Mr. Venugopalachary's attitude. They said the ex-MP had been engineering trouble in their constituencies for long. Interventions and assurances by the party president stopped Mr. Janardhan, Mr. Nagesh, Mr. Bhumanna, and a host of other party functionaries from joining the TRS. According to TDP sources, Mr. Naidu assured them that Mr. Venugopalachary would not be renominated as a Polit Bureau member.
