`Priority for drinking water, drainage system'

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JUNE 22. The newly-elected Mayor of Mangalore, Purandaradasa Kulur, today said that he would pay more attention towards improving basic facilities such as drinking water, improving drainage system and vital infrastructure in the city.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Kulur stated that he was moved by the people's plight for drinking water last year and that this had motivated him to take up conception and planning for constructing another vented dam across the Nethravati at a chosen place.

He said though it might not be possible to complete it within the given period of one year of Mayor's term, he would give the issue a push start immediately.

Stating that he was also in favour of a better bus stand for Mangalore, Mr. Kulur said that this was a long-term project which needed to be taken up immediately.

Other projects that would be taken up during his tenure would be the concretisation of the road between Urva stores to Lady hill, improving the central market area, improving the parks and gardens in the city and earmark more space for public amenities, giving more importance to the hygiene and health, eradication of mosquito menace and eco-friendly disposal of garbage, he said.

Mr. Kulur hinted at taking up steps to bring more transparency in the administration of the Corporation and bring higher sense of time among the officials and also computerise all the departments of the City Corporation.

Mr. Kulur said that he was against imposing Self Assessment Scheme for property tax.
