BANGALORE, JUNE 22. The Commissioner of Police, S. Mariswamy, has ordered an inquiry into the allegations that the staff of Byappanahalli Police Station tortured Kokila, a eunuch, on June 18. An Assistant Commissioner of Police of the City Crime Branch would hold the inquiry, Mr. Mariswamy said in a press release on Tuesday. Kokila was subjected to medical examination and the doctor said that she had suffered bruises on arms and legs, he said. Around 10.30 p.m. on June 18, the beat police heard screams of women from the NGEF Grounds in Byappanahalli Police Station limits. The police who rushed there saw a few men and two eunuchs. On seeing the police, the men ran away and the police brought one of the eunuchs, Kokila, to the Byappanahalli Police Station for interrogation. On June 19, Kokila lodged a complaint in Ulsoor Police Station that 10 men had molested her at the NGEF grounds and later, the policemen at the police station too had sexually harassed her. Mr. Mariswamy said Muniyappa had lodged a complaint that a few eunuchs had robbed him of Rs. 4,800 in cash and a gold ring when he had gone to the NGEF Grounds to answer nature's call on the night of June 18. On Muniyappa's complaint, the police had arrested five persons, he said. The Commissioner alleged that some eunuchs were indulging in "prostitution" in and around NGEF Grounds and were robbing "innocent men." A few cases relating to illegal activities of eunuchs had been registered in the Byappanahalli Police Station, he said, while adding that Kokila had confessed that she was a sex worker.
