Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 23. The Pondicherry Agriculturists Union president, T.Geethanathan, has called upon the Centre to ensure that farmers in the Union Territory were supplied free power. In a memorandum presented to the Pattali Makkal Katchi MP, M. Ramadass, the Union leader said that the Act on protection of underground water also needed to be enforced urgently. The memorandum listed several suggestions to safeguard water resources in Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The farmers also called for special outlets for selling farm produce. Community bore wells should be erected in the villages to augment irrigation facilities for farmers. The Union also wanted, among other things, steps to supply farm implements at subsidised rates. Farm clinics should be set up at the village level to guide farmers on managing pest attacks. It also called for setting up kisan bhavans so that farmers coming to Pondicherry to attend meetings and seminars could get accommodation cheaply.
