Anand receives his third Oscar

NEW DELHI, JUNE 23. World No. 2 Viswanathan Anand became the second non-Russian player to have won three Chess Oscars when the Indian was handed over the trophy at a star-studded ceremony in Moscow.

In an elegant ceremony in the Russian capital recently, Anand received the award from Russian Deputy Prime Minister and president of Russian Chess federation Alexander Zukhov in presence of chess legends including Borris Spassky, current World No. 1 Garry Kasparov and former World champion Vassily Smyslov.

Anand had won the award earlier in 1997 and 1998 and joined the legendary Bobby Foscher who won it in 1970, '71 and '72.

An elated Anand, in his speech, said, "I am happy to get the award again in Moscow. It is very special to be applauded and appreciated by so many legends.''

Editor of the Chess 64 magazine, which introduced the award, Alexander Roshal was also present on the occasion.

Anand topped the selection procedure to bag the prestigious award and was followed by Peter Svidler, Vladimir Kramnik, Garry Kasparov and Peter Leko. — UNI
