Creation of revenue secretary posts in villages sought

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Revenue Services Association on Wednesday urged the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Revenue Minister, D. Prasada Rao, to create post of revenue secretary in each village under the control of the MRO.

Leaders of the association, K. Laxmaiah, president, B.S. Varma, associate president, N. Ananda Rao, general secretary, and C. Vijayaraghavan, treasurer, in a statement called upon the Government to ascertain the views of Collectors at the conference on June 26 on the proposal to appoint revenue secretary for maintaining the revenue records and accounts and for protecting Government lands. The association appealed to Dr. Reddy and Mr. Prasad to consider compassionate appointments of children of village servants in existing vacancies to strengthen the village administration.

Plea for child rights panel

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Alliance for Child Rights on Wednesday demanded setting up of a child rights commission in the State for exclusively looking into the exploitation of children in the context of the alleged employment of child labour by Sanghi Spinning Mills.

P. Ramesh Sekhar Reddy, its State convener, in a statement called upon the Ranga Reddy district administration to file a case against the unit. He urged the management to release the child labourers and pay them compensation.

According to Mr. Reddy, the State has the highest incidence of child labour in the country. Of an estimated 4.5 lakh children in the age group of 6-14 employed in cottonseed fields in the country, the State accounted for 2,47,800 in four districts.

Hike in minimum wages urged

HYDERABAD: The State executive of the All-India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha on Wednesday demanded amendment to the Minimum Wages Act and enforce it for the benefit of 1.4 crore agricultural labour in rural areas. A delegation of the sabha made the demand in a memorandum submitted to the Labour Minister, G. Vinod, seeking Rs. 66 as the daily minimum wage for the agricultural labour.

G. Divakar, general secretary of the sabha, who called on the Minister along with G. Narsaiah, MLA, and president, said the memorandum also asked the Government to organise publicity campaign on the Act in rural areas and to constitute special machinery for introducing the amendment in this session of the Assembly. The Minister, according to a statement issued by the sabha, assured the delegation of taking steps as suggested in the memorandum.

Selected for award

Hyderabad: P. Yashoda Reddy, former chairperson of the Official Language Commission, has been selected for Suravaram Prathap Reddy Award-2004 by Suravaram Vyjayanthi Trust, according to a press release by the secretary of the trust, Siva Reddy.

The award will be conferred on Prof. Yashoda Reddy at a function on June 27 at Andhra Saraswath Parishat Hall.

The Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy, will release a book in Telugu on Hindu festivals to mark the occasion. C. Narayana Reddy will preside over it.

Honoured posthumously

HYDERABAD: B.V.Rao, former head of the Venkateswara Hatcheries Private Limited, was posthumously honoured by the World's Poultry Science Association by electing him to the International Poultry Hall of Fame at the recently concluded XXII World Poultry Congress in Istanbul (Turkey).

The honour was conferred on Dr. Rao in recognition of his contribution to poultry science and world-wide poultry industries `above and beyond the call of duty', according to a WPSA communiqué. G.L. Jain of VHPL received the hall of fame of award.

Train halt at Kallur

HYDERABAD: The 7603 Kacheguda-Yesvantpur Sri Satya Sai Prashanthi Nilayam Express will halt at Kallur on the Guntakal-Anantapur section of the South Central Railway from July 1. It will arrive/depart the station at 5.59/6 a.m.

In the return direction, the train will arrive/depart at 8.07 p.m./8.08 p.m., according to a press release.

Woman naxal surrenders

NALGONDA: Eesam Poolamma alias Kumari alias Saritha (22), deputy commander of the Krishnapatti dalam's special guerrilla squad (SGS), surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, N. Balasubramanyam, here on Wednesday.

The Superintendent of Police told newsmen that Poolamma was in the People's War fold for the last five years and she made up her mind to join the mainstream after escaping the encounter at Ajmapur on May 31. She was involved in the killings of the Manchala Sub-Inspector, Saidaih, and the Kambalapally TDP leader, Mekala Mallaiah.

AISF activists ransack DEO office

ANANTAPUR: Activists of the All India Students' Federation (AISF) staged a dharna in front of office of the District Education Officer (DEO) and later ransacked furniture in the office, in protest against permitting reopening of a private school after it was sealed yesterday for collecting heavy donations.

Some 25 activists led by the AISF leaders Vemaiah Yadav, Ankanna and others first staged a dharna in front of the office seeking a reply from the DEO as to why the school was permitted to re-open without completing any inquiry.

The school was sealed by the deputy DEO, Muralikrishna Reddy, yesterday when AISF activists took him there to see as to how the school was collecting high donations from parents. The Dy.DEO had found that the school was collecting Rs. 5,000 as donation but was giving receipt only for Rs. 1,000 for new admissions.

3 women hurt in mishap

NELLORE: Three women selling fish were injured when a load of firewood fell on them, after a tractor carrying the laod overturned near the market at Sangam on Wednesday. The mishap was stated to have occurred when the driver was taking a turn on a narrow strip. The injured have been admitted in the local Government hospital.

Office-bearers elected

TIRUPATI: SVIMS Employees Welfare Association has elected M. Ramachandraiah and D. Anand Babu as its new president and secretary respectively. Other office-bearers elected are K.Vivekanand and Y.Nirmala (vice-presidents), V. Madhusudhan Naidu and Vahida (joint secretaries), P. Padmanabha Reddy (treasurer) and R. Ramesh (organising secretary).

Welfare work by Diocese

NELLORE: M. Jwala Sudhakar, convenor, Diocese of Nellore Dalit Catholic Welfare Association (DNDCWA), has said the Diocese comprising of Nellore and Prakasam districts, has undertaken a number of welfare programmes, under the guidance of the Bishop, Balaswamy. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday that in addition to construction of houses, supply of fishing nets, scholarships to bright students and education were undertaken.

Dalit Sena's demand

NELLORE: The district unit of Dalit Sena has demanded a separate package for Dalits. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the Sena called for allocation of more funds in the budget to provide opportunities for those living in rural areas.

CPI(M) hails budget

CUDDAPAH: The district CPI(M) secretary, B. Narayana, on Wednesday welcomed the State Budget presented the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, which allotted Rs. 4,221 crores for the irrigation sector. In a statement, he, however, lamented that steps mooted for the welfare of farmers and distribution of land did not find mention.

Admission to special school

TIRUPATI: Rashtriya Seva Samithi (RASS) has inviting applications from mentally/physically challenged and hearing impaired children in the age group of 6-10 for admission in Sahaya Village run by it near Renigunta on the Cuddapah highway. The NGO runs an integrated special school up to Class VII for diabled children, with Telugu as medium of instruction. Boarding, lodging, education and medical aid are free. Applications can be submitted at RASS Seva Nilayam on Annamayya road (Next to RDO's office) here on or before June 30.

Undertrial dies of chest pain

NIZAMABAD: A 52-year-old undertrial, Desi Gangadhar, died at the Kamareddy area hospital while undergoing treatment for chest pain on Wednesday.

Reports reaching here said that Desi Gangadhar, hailing from Bhiknaoor mandal complained of chest pain in the morning. The jail staff rushed him to Kamareddy area hospital for treatment. He was admitted into the emergency ward for treatment but suffered massive heart attack and died. The body was handed over to the family members in the evening.

Office-bearers elected

KHAMMAM: The Khammam Chamber of Commerce today elected unanimously its new body with Koppu Naresh Kumar as president.

The other office-bearers are Menthula Srisailam (secretary), Kurapati Venkateswarlu (joint secretary), P. Suresh (treasurer) and Chinni Krishna (vice-president).
