High Court judge transferred
BANGALORE JUNE 23. T.S. Thakur, judge of the Karnataka High Court, has been transferred to the Delhi High Court. Intimation about the transfer has reached the Karnataka High Court, according to official sources. Before his transfer to the Karnataka High Court, Mr. Thakur was a judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
Meet on areca nut
BANGALORE JUNE 23. The Minister for Agriculture, K. Srinivasa Gowda, has invited MPs and MLAs from Chikmagalur, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada districts for a meeting to discuss the issue of providing support price for areca nut. The meeting will be held at the Conference Hall of the Vidhana Soudha on June 28 at 11 a.m. Issues relating to ban of areca nut import and sales tax will also be discussed at the meeting, says an official press release.
24 CMC members join JD(S)
Raichur June 23. Twenty-four members of the Raichur City Municipal Council, including its chairman, Mouneshwari Pampapathi, and vice-chairman, M. Eranna, have joined the Janata Dal (Secular). The Congress had expelled Mr. Eranna from the party when he contested the Assembly elections from Raichur against the official candidate, Syed Yasin. The seat was won by the BJP. In a statement here today, Mr. Eranna said a delegation of 23 councillors, led by him, met the President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (S) and Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, in Bangalore on Tuesday and expressed their desire to join the party. Mr. Siddaramaiah welcomed them into the party, he added.
`Board chiefs should quit'
Raichur June 23. Jagannath Sunkari, general secretary of the Raichur district unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), has called for appointing new chairmen and members to boards and corporations. Addressing presspersons here today, he said that people who had been appointed to these posts were still continuing despite the change in government. He said those who had been appointed to the posts by the previous regime should tender their resignation. Welcoming the decision of a group of Raichur CMC members to join the Janata Dal (S), Mr. Sunkari said this had strengthened the party.
Tungabhadra dam level 1,600 ft
BELLARY June 23. The water level in the Tungabhadra reservoir touched 1,600.16 feet today. The full reservoir level is 1,633 feet. The inflow recorded at 8.30 a.m. was 17,542 cusecs and the outflow was 200 cusecs. During the same period last year, the water level in the dam was 156.93 feet. Water will be let into the canals from July 11.

Private grainages warned
BANGALORE JUNE 23. The Commissioner for Sericulture, Aravind Jannu, has said there is no shortage of crossbred layings and cocoons in the State and it is some of the private grainages that were creating an artificial shortage by holding back stocks. In a press release, he said in the wake of reports that there was a shortage of crossbred layings, senior officials of the department made inspections in Bangalore, Kolar, and Mandya districts and it was found that private grainages had more than adequate quantities of layings and cocoons. The Sericulture Department said that the demands for cocoons and layings from farmers were being met and there was no cause for worry. There was no need for farmers to pay a higher rate as the prices had come down, the release added. Mr. Jannu warned the private grainages of stringent action if they continued to hold back the stocks.
CSI meet from Friday
Bangalore June 23. The Computer Society of India, Division-III (Scientific Applications), and CSI-Bangalore Chapter are organising a two-day national conference on "Empowering Defence using IT" on Friday and Saturday at the Satish Dhawan Auditorium of the Indian Institute of Science here. "The objective of the conference is to bring the armed forces, including intelligence agencies, the academia and the IT industry, on a single platform, the conference chairperson, C.R. Two-hour leave for voters
BANGALORE JUNE 23. In view of the biennial elections to the Legislative Council from two graduates and two teachers' constituencies on Thursday, the Government has directed industrial, trade, and other organisations falling under the constituencies to permit their employees to be away from work for two hours that day to enable them to exercise their franchise. The constituencies going to the polls are South-West Graduates and Teachers constituencies (Bijapur, Bagalkot, and Belgaum); South Graduates' Constituency (Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, and Hassan); and the West Teachers' Constituency (Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, and Uttara Kannada).
Centres for KSOU examination
BANGALORE June 23. The Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) will conduct its 1st year M.A. and M.Com examinations on June 25 and 26 at the following centres. B.E.T. Sadatunnisa Degree College, Bismillah Educational Trust, Bismillahnagar, Bannerghatta Road Cross, Bangalore-560029 is the centre for 1st year M.A. (Kannada) and 1st year M.A. (English) examinations, to be conducted on June 25, and the 1st year M.A. (History) examination to be held on June 26. Government First Grade College, 3rd main, 7th cross, R.M.C. Layout, Vijayanagar, Bangalore-560040, is the centre for the 1st year M.A. (Hindi) and M.A. (Sanskrit) examinations on June 25 and the 1st year M.A. (Urdu0 examination to be conducted on June 26. V.V. Puram Evening College for Arts and Science is the centre for M.A. (Economics) and M.A. (Political Science) examinations on June 25, and the 1st year M.A. (Sociology) and M.Com. examinations the next day. Students could get their admission tickets on production of their identity cards at the respective examination centres from June 23, the university's regional director, K.J. Suresh, said in a press release.
