By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, JUNE 23. K.N. Rajanna, Janata Dal (S) MLA for Bellavi in Tumkur district and Chairman of the Karnataka State Cooperative Apex Bank, has approached the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Krishna, seeking police protection following an alleged threat held out to his life by the Congress MLC, V.S. Ugrappa, who also hails from the same district. Mr. Rajanna told presspersons here today that Mr. Ugrappa was making false allegations against him, apparently because he had emerged as an important political leader in the district. Mr Rajanna's wife, S.R. Shantala, is the President of the Tumkur District Zilla Panchayat. Mr. Ugrappa charged that he was assaulted at the Tumkur Zilla Panchayat meeting on June 19. He was subsequently admitted to the Tumkur General Hospital and thereafter to Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, Bangalore. He filed a complaint with the New Extension Police Station in Tumkur on Tuesday. Subsequently Mr. Rajannaalso filed a complaint at the same police station mentioning the threat held out to his life by Mr. Ugrappa. Mr. Rajanna called on the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Tuesday and complained to him about the behaviour of Mr. Ugrappa. He requested the Chief Minister and the KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary, to advise Mr. Ugrappa and his friends in Tumkur district Congress to cooperate with the Janata Dal (S) leaders. The Chief Minister reportedly assured him that he would talk to Mr. Ugrappa. Among the other Janata Dal (S) legislators who participated in the discussions with the Chief Minister were H. Ningappa (Kunigal), Channigappa (Koratagere), and Srinivas (Gubbi). Our Tumkur Staff Correspondent reports: The row over the assault on Mr. Ugrappa took a curious turn today with the BJP taking objection to the inclusion of its youth leader, Dhaniya Kumar, among the 12 accused in the complaint lodged with the police by Mr. Ugrappa. The BJP leaders, H. Veerabhadraiah and T.R. Sadashivaiah, said in a press release that there was no question of Mr. Kumar's involvement in the assault on Mr. Ugrappa.
