Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, JUNE 23 . Palakkarai Main Road in the city would be closed for traffic from July 1 to facilitate construction of a road overbridge, coming up across the railway level crossing, at Bheema Nagar. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting convened by the Collector, V. Pandian, here today. The closure of the road would clear the decks for expeditious construction of the bridge, connecting Bheema Nagar Road with Palakkarai Main Road. The T-shaped bridge would run across the Uyyakondan river in Palakkarai, the only motorable link across the river in the region. The bridge, one of the four sanctioned for Tiruchi in 1998, would run for about 300 metres on Palakkarai Main Road. The Highways Department, the executing agency, had acquired 57,888 sq.ft. of land, and it was waiting for closure of the road to take up the remaining work on Palakkarai Main Road after completing nearly 50 per cent of the work on Bheema Nagar Main Road. The work had to be halted pending closure of Palakkarai Main Road. With a stretch of Madurai Road remaining closed till recently due to construction of the Thennur overbridge, the district administration had advised the Highways Department against taking up work on the Palakkarai bridge simultaneously. The Thennur road overbridge was opened recently through which road traffic would be diverted now. Today's meeting was attended by the City Police Commissioner, T.P.Sundaramoorthy, the City Engineer, V.Sivaraman, senior officials of the Highways Department, Regional Transport Authority, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. The authorities discussed the issue of shifting the utility lines such as underground drainage pipes, water mains, power and telecommunication lines passing through the site. The corporation authorities assured to shift their utility lines soon. The Highways Department authorities indicated that the bridge would be completed within a year.
