Lapses in off-campus schedules

THE OFF-CAMPUS programme offered by the Mahatma Gandhi University has come under fire with both students and parents pointing out several lapses in the conduct of courses and examinations. The latest round of complaints against the off-campus programme had come from students who secured admission for various postgraduate programmes during 2002-2004.

The course duration for MBA, LL.M and MA programmes offered by the university is two years. According to the prospectus given to the students, the annual examinations for each course will be held at the end of each year. The student community points out that the varsity has violated this assurance by holding exams before the completion of actual course period.

They say that the examinations for this year were announced three months before the end of actual course duration. Students say that the course material and books were given to them months after various courses started. Students of the second year MBA programme had complained that the results of the first and second semester examinations have not been fully published.

The delay in publication of results had resulted in students losing an opportunity to apply for improvement or revaluation, say parents. The student community has urged the authorities to ensure that sufficient time is provided to complete the project work included under various programmes. Students say that they need at least two months to complete the project report evaluated out of 300 marks. Meanwhile, university officials say that the exams are held as per schedule fixed earlier. Shortage of staff and the increase in the number of examinations are some of the major reasons for the delay in publication of results, they add. The university has also decided to work out a plan to streamline its examination system.
