THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 23. The 25-year-old youth, Ravi Kumar who was arrested from Bihar in connection with the murder of Meera Devi (38), was today brought to the city by a special police team. He was arrested by the Circle Inspector of Police (Peroorkada), K.S. Sudarshan, with the help of the Bihar police from Patna on June 18. He was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court, Patna, the same day. The court granted a transit remand of six days for the accused to be brought to the place of occurrence of the crime. Mr. Sudarshan said the accused would be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court here on Thursday. The police are likely to seek Ravi Kumar's custody in connection with the probe. The charred body of Meera Devi, the wife of an official attached to the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard), was found in the house rented by the couple at Arapura Lane in Vattiyoorkavu on April 12. The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Thiruvananthapuram Range), Arun Kumar Sinha, said that Meera Devi's murder was initially thought to be a suicide. However, the post- mortem examination showed that she was stabbed to death before her body was set on fire using kerosene. On verification, it was found that she regularly called a mobile telephone number from a public telephone booth in Vattiyoorkavu. The mobile connection was found to be in the name of Ravi Kumar. Mr. Sudarshan said that Ravi Kumar initially denied his involvement in the crime. His statement was verified by the police. He said the police team found several discrepancies in Ravi Kumar's statement. For instance, the accused was hard pressed to explain his absence from Patna between April 8 and April 12. Many of the people Ravi Kumar said he had met on these days denied seeing him, the Circle Inspector said. The police also recorded the statement of Pooja, a resident of Patna who worked as a maid in Meera Devi's household, in front of a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC.
