dated June 25,1954: Win for R. Krishnan

Two of India's three players, R. Krishnan and Naresh Kumar, reached the third round of the men's singles in the Wimbledon lawn tennis championships in London on June 23. The third player, Narendra Nath, went down fighting to A. Larsen, one of America's "big guns" who won the second-round match by 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. Krishnan, the young Indian champion, disposed of D. Scharenguivel, the Ceylon player, in 45 minutes, the score being 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, and Naresh Kumar beat J. Palada, the Yugoslav international 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. Krishnan played an intelligent hard-hitting game and forced his opponent into numerous errors. The Indian lad raced through the first set in only ten minutes. The second set was governed by service until Krishnan's weighty forecourt play gave him the vital breakthrough in the eighth game. Krishnan broke through early in the third set to lead 4-1, but then his volleying faltered and he dropped his own delivery. He quickly recovered to lead 5-2 and then served out the match to love. In the third round Krishnan meets the seeded Australian left-hander, M. Rose.
