Mexico City: A journalist from a crusading news weekly famous for its exposes on drug trafficking and corruption in the northern border city of Tijuana has been shot dead. Police said Francisco J Ortiz Franco had just got into his car with his two children when a black jeep with darkened windows pulled up and a masked gunman got out and shot him four times in the head and chest. Newspapers reported that the children, who were not hurt, said the gunman had struck just after their father sensed they were being followed and ordered them to buckle their seat belts. Mr. Ortiz (48) was one of the founders and co-editors of the Tijuana-based Zeta tabloid, which has a reputation for hard-hitting investigative reporting presented in huge banner headlines under the motto ``Free like the wind''.
