Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 24. The Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee president, V. Narayanasamy, MP, today charged the police here of being `inactive' in curbing anti-social elements. In a release here today, he said that of late Pondicherry had been seeing crimes being committed in broad daylight. He said there had been a spurt in the number of rowdy elements. Illicit liquour and the system of `katta panchayats' (settling disputes through private sources) had been chiefly responsible for the increase in serious crime. He said some political parties were also supporting anti-social elements. Mr. Narayanasamy said criminal elements were functioning with impunity because of support from a section of the police. He appealed to the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, to convene a meeting with police officers to work out an action plan to check crime.
