Farmers' plight

Sir, — This refers to the article, "When farmers die" (June 22). Giving free power alone is not enough to prevent farmers' suicides.

In the long term, the Government should ensure that they are not exploited by middlemen who drag them into debts; it should help them in cutting costs; give them low interest loans with least procedural formalities; and ensure that big farmers do not get the benefit of subsidies.

R.P. Rammohan,
Hyderabad
