Kurnool
By Our Staff Reporter
KURNOOL, JUNE 24. The secretary of VOICE, V.S.P. Sastry, has urged the Government to reduce the prices of petroleum products which placed burden on common man. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said the sales tax on the petrol at present was 30.5 per cent which worked out at Rs. 12 per litre. The common man could be relieved of the burden if the Government initiated steps to collect the tax arrears which mounted to Rs. 2,666 crores in the State. Mr. Sastry said the present hike could be neutralised by either reducing the tax rate by five per cent or by collecting five per cent of tax arrears. It was nothing but penalising the sincere tax payer. He urged the Government to publish the list of tax defaulters so that pressure could be brought on them by people's organisations. Mr. Sastry said the non-performing assets (NPA) in banks rose to Rs. 1.50 lakh crores.
