ANANTAPUR, JUNE 24. The district unit of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has alleged that the Congress Government has deceived the people of the district by allocating meagre funds to Tungabhadra High Level Canal (HLC) and Handri Neeva projects in the current year's budget proposals, after assuring huge funds. Talking to newspersons here today the district president of the party, V. Hanumantharaya Chowdary, and the leaders K.M. Saifullah, P. Samanthakamani and A. Narasa Naidu, reminded that the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had repeated his act of forgetting the pre-poll promises now like what he did after 1989 elections. They stated that after taking up a padayatra from Lepakshi to Pothireddipadu in Kurnool district before the 1989 elections Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy had promised allocation huge funds for completion of pending irrigation projects in the district. But, after the party wrested power from the TDP he had forgotten his promise and the pending projects were left to their fate. Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy had repeated same thing now, they observed. He had assured allocation of sufficient funds for HLC, Handri Neeva and Yadiki canal during his recent visit to the district. But, his promise was failed to reflect in the budget introduced into Assembly yesterday. Against a requirement of about Rs. 40 crores only Rs. 10 crores was allocated to HLC and a meagre Rs. 11 crores to Handri Neeva, first phase of which he had promised to complete in three years with an estimated cost of Rs. 1,300 crores. He had also promised allocation of entire funds required by HLC before the polls. Medium irrigation projects were also neglected badly in the budget as only Rs. 1 crore was allocated to Maddileru and the pending projects, Jilledubanderu and Vandamaneru, were not included in the budget at all. It had also failed to mention the Tungabhadra flood flow canal.
