GULBARGA, JUNE 24. The State Government has prepared a comprehensive action plan for producing 108.17 lakh tonnes of foodgrains in 2004-05. As much as 73.76 hectares of land will be cultivated to achieve this target. Official sources told The Hindu here that it was hoped that the early monsoon in many parts of the State, particularly in the southern and northern regions, would help achieve the target. Crops were sown in more land this year than previously, they added. Scanty rain in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region is the only concern of the agriculture officials. They hope that sowing, which has been suspended in the region, will pick up if a few spells of good rain are received. The poor rain has affected only the green and black gram crops. Red gram, a major crop in the region, particularly in Gulbarga district, can be sown later. According to sources, the Government has set a target to produce 18.22 lakh tonnes of oilseeds in 24.5 lakh hectares of land this year. The target for the kharif season is 13.05 lakh tonnes in 16.75 lakh hectares of land. To meet the target, 20.69 lakh tonnes of foodgrains should be produced in 25.06 lakh hectares of land and 2.49 lakh tonnes of oilseeds in 5.35 lakh hectares during the rabi season. The target for the summer crop is 8.43 lakh tonnes of foodgrains in 18.28 lakh hectares and 8,000 tonnes of oilseeds in 25,000 hectares. Under foodgrain production, paddy tops the list with a target of 39.93 lakh tonnes from 14 lakh hectares. The target for jowar has been fixed at 18.21 lakh tonnes from 18.70 lakh hectares in all the three seasons. The production target of maize has been fixed at 20.53 lakh tonnes from 5.84 lakh hectares. It is 16.2 lakh tonnes from 9.60 lakh hectares for ragi. Among pulses, red gram dominates with a targeted production of 2.64 lakh tonnes from 3.75 lakh hectares. The target for horse gram has been fixed at 1.85 lakh tonnes from 3.57 lakh hectares. Groundnut dominates in the oilseeds category with a target of 12.19 lakh tonnes from 12.30 lakh hectares. Sunflower production target has been fixed at 3.30 lakh tonnes covering 7.75 lakh hectares. Under commercial crops, the target fixed for cotton is 10.41 lakh bales covering six lakh hectares and for sugarcane, it is 359.70 lakh tonnes from 3.30 lakh hectares. The area under cultivation this year covering foodgrains, oilseeds, and commercial crops has been fixed at 108.16 lakh hectares. A major portion of this will be covered under kharif crops in 69 lakh hectares, the rabi season would cover 33.51 lakh hectares and summer crops would cover 5.65 lakh hectares.
