CHANDIGARH, JUNE 24. For convenience of electricity consumers, the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) and the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) have decided to launch the scheme of pre-paid meters. Haryana would be the first State in the country to introduce pre-paid meters just like pre-paid cell phone cards, an official spokesman said. He said that the Nigams would start a survey at Panchkula and Gurgaon to gauge the consumer response. The concept of installation and benefits of the pre-paid meters would be disseminated to the public. The teams of UHBVN staff would shortly conduct a door-to-door survey in Group Housing Societies of Sector-20 and Mansa Devi Complex at Panchkula. He said that the Nigams would soon start the process of procuring three phase pre-paid electronic meters. Referring to the advantages of pre-paid electronic meters, he said that it would avoid the necessity of meter readings, avert wrong billings and disconnection, levy of surcharge on delayed payments, wait for payment of bills in long queues and minimum interface with Power Utilities. He said that this system would have operational transparency and enable the consumers to purchase or recharge their electricity tokens or cards, from the authorised agencies to be located in the vicinity of willing consumers and societies. The Nigams would issue recharge tokens or cards suitable to the need and affordability of the consumers. The major difference between the present post paid billing system and pre-paid system is that the consumer will now be able to buy electricity in advance and use it as per their need. - PTI
