Uttaranchal
DEHRA DUN, JUNE 24. The Uttaranchal Chief Minister, N D Tiwari, today said the campaign of women's empowerment should be taken to the village level and ensure involvement of Gram and Nagar Panchayats. Addressing a seminar here on women's issues, he touched upon the prevailing alcoholism in the State. To stop this social ill, a ``mass agitation should be initiated at the state level and womens policy should include it in its agenda.'' The symposium dealt with a host of issues, especially alcoholism and drug addiction in the state, health, education, women's empowerment and social condition of women. National Commission for Women President, Poornima Advani, said the development of Uttaranchal was not possible till the women of the State were empowered. Women are still not getting due justice, she said and emphasised on curtailing atrocities against them. The seminar was attended by experts, activists and a large number of women from all the 13 districts of the State. Speaking to newspersons later, the NCW chief vehemently stressed on proper filing of FIRs in police stations for further action against crime against women. She lamented that in most of the cases against women atrocities, improper or non-filing of FIR in the police station led to the victim not getting justice. Expressing discontentment at the media's pessimistic attitude at the national level, she asserted that media has to play a very vital role in bringing to light the crimes against women and problems faced by them. Speaking about the achievements of the NCW, Ms Advani said the commission has reached even to the remote village, which is itself a great achievement towards women justice. She also called for making the NCW totally free from political interference and also supported 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies. - UNI
