NEW DELHI, JUNE 24. The Canadian High Commission here has announced a new set of rules for visa applicants who pay a representative to act on their behalf. Stating that a paid representative is one who charges a fee to represent, advise or consult in immigration matters, the new regulations state that such a person should be authorised. The authorised paid representatives could be immigration consultants who are members in good standing of the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants; lawyers who are members in good standing of a Canadian law society and students-at-law under their supervision; or notaries who are members in good standing of the Chambre des notaires du Quebec and students at law under their supervision. The note said the applicants would be required to disclose the name and membership information of their representative at the time of applying and those whose application or proceeding was already under way on April 13, 2004, could continue to use the services of their paid representative until April 13, 2008. After April 13, 2008, if the paid representative is not a member of one of the organisation listed above, the applicants will have to either go unrepresented or will have to hire an authorised representative. Family members, friends and members of non-government or religious organisations, the note said, may also represent the applicants, as long as no fees were charged for their services.
