Call for healthy trends in distance education

By Our Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE, JUNE 24 . The Vice-Chancellor of the Bharathiar University, S.Sivasubramanian, today deplored the unhealthy practices in the extension and publicity activities of distance education in the country.

He pleaded for formulating "healthy trends" and "socially relevant" publicity norms while imparting distance education, according to a university release. Addressing the co-ordinators of the Personal Contact Programme Centres and Off-campus Academic Programme Centres of the School of Distance Education of the university, he said his university was prepared to "attack" the foreign universities before they attacked Indian universities.

He lamented that it was very bad on the part of the institutions indulging in "cheap publicity" like "join now -Degree assured".

Hence it was the responsibility of the authorities of the institutions to ensure that the students were not exploited. The VC said the conduct of distance education in Bharathiar University had been much appreciated as one of quality and industrially relevant educational systems so as to help the student face society with current knowledge.

Besides, its examination system had been deemed a "role model" in this part of the country. He was happy to point out that Bharthiar University was the pioneer in introducing latest technologies like dynamic website and wire-free technologies. One more state-of-the-art computer laboratory has been added to strengthen distance education.

He asserted that Bharthiar University was one of the few universities in the country, which had introduced and maintained one and the same syllabus for regular as well as distance mode curriculum.

In addition, improvement facilities had also been introduced for the students. He expressed the hope that the university would have a tie-up with EDUSAT, the country's dedicated satellite for educational services.
